What I learned from Larry’s Lagoon

Larry’s Lagoon is the second segment on VeggieTales Classics – God Wants Me to Forgive Them?, the second video Big Idea ever made.  This is a parody of Gilligan’s Island, although there’s no Mary-Anne.

The main lesson is that we have to forgive those that ask even if it’s hard.  I’m tempted to say that I learned that coconut trees are pretty good singers, or that the professor from Gilligan’s Island should have made a helicopter, but what I found interesting was how Larry reacted to not being forgiven.

I think that too many of us, when someone doesn’t forgive us, simply give up and walk away just like Larry did.  While this is common, this isn’t for the best.  As we see in this story, Larry’s running away made things worse as Bob and the gang had to go out and find him.

In reality, if we run away without making amends we can leave hard feelings, we can keep things from getting healed, and we can become bitter— all things that we should avoid.

So, what should you do?  Find someone to go with you, to help you reconcile with your friend.  Do something, anything, to help make things right.

The Forgive-O-Matic

The Forgive-O-Matic was on the second VeggieTales video ever, and was the last time that Big Idea tried something other than a silly song between their segments.  It was based on a puppet show that Phil Vischer had written, and it fit with the theme.  At the time, it was not determined that there’d always be a silly song, but after this video and the fan mail asking “Where’s the silly song?” the rest was history.

What I Learned from the Grapes of Wrath

One of the two stories on VeggieTales Classics – God Wants Me to Forgive Them?  is the story of the Grapes of Wrath.  Now, I’ve never read the work that this is a parody of, so you’ll have to forgive my ignorance!  The message, however, is a good one.

Junior is insulted or made fun of by the child grapes, and his dad tells him to forgive them.  In a funny aside, Junior talks with Larry and Bob who are narrating the story to ask them (and QWERTY) how many times the Bible says to forgive someone.

QWERTY responds with 70 times 7– which is Biblically correct, but there’s a bigger point at work here.  The Bible’s not saying that the 491st time someone does something to us it’s ok not to forgive.  It’s to say that we should forgive without limit.

It’s a reflection of God’s forgiveness, which continues on no matter how many time we fail.  We need to be like Him.
